Isometrics: The Anywhere, Anytime Exercise

Any exercise is good for the body, if done with care. However, there are many reasons to do isometric exercises, at least by adding them to your normal routine.

Start with the obvious: isometrics can be done in your street clothes while sitting at your desk, listening to a lecture, or watching television. Simply using your own body with or without a few simple pieces of equipment, you can tone and tighten many of your body's muscles in a short time. Isometrics simply means there is an equality of pressure. Sit comfortably, press your palms together firmly, and hold for ten seconds. That is an isometric exercise.

These exercises are wonderful as an adjunct to strength or endurance exercises, because they provide the quick and the precise muscle toning that will make an athlete out of an executive. These exercises are good for the heart without straining it, because they are not punishing or straining. They are short, precise and effective. They can help office workers be more efficient. Housewives and "Mr. Moms" can use these to de-stress any time of day. You don’t need to change into loose-fitting clothing, drive to the gym, and pay heavy dues to "sweat it out."

These exercises are good for people trying to build muscle, lose weight, tone and trim, and relax. They help build stronger bones, which avoids osteoporosis. They increase your neurological response system by encouraging you to concentrate on your exercise and breathing. Rather than thirty minutes on a rowing machine, you can do a short series of isometrics for the same results. Isometrics help train people for living and not just sports.
